Overview of Active Membership
Physicians elected to Active membership after Dec. 31, 1988 must:
(1) be three-year, ACGME FP residency trained; or
(2) have completed either an AOA-approved one-year rotating general or
FP internship plus two years of an AOA-approved general or FP residency ,
or an AOA-approved three-year general or FP residency; or
(3) have completed a FP residency program approved by the College of
Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and who were subsequently board
certified by the CFPC and practice exclusively within the United States;
or
(4) have held Active membership prior to or as of Dec. 31, 1988.
Additionally, applicants must be duly licensed, meet CME requirements
for entry into the Active category, and one of the following criteria:
- Physicians engaged in the practice of family medicine.
- Physicians applying after Dec. 31, 1988 whoare engaged in the practice
of emergency medicine. Physicians engaged in full-time teaching of
family practice or full-time medical administration.
Privileges
May vote and have floor at Assembly, vote and hold office.
Terms of Membership
Three years
Continuing Study Requirements
150 hours of approved CME every three years.
New applicants:
ELIGIBILITY FOR ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP:
1. Former Active Members Re-applying for Active Status Former Active
members must show evidence of having completed 150 hours of continuing
education acceptable to the Commission on continuing Medical Education,
with the 150 hours accumulated during the three years immediately
preceding application.
2. CME Requirements for ACGME, AOA or CFPC Family Practice Residency Graduates First Applying for Active Membership--
-If the applicant is applying within the first year after residency
completion, CME hours are not required for acceptance to Active status.
-If the applicant is applying more than one but less than three years
after residency completion, the applicant must provide evidence of 100
approved CME hours completed during the two years immediately preceding
application.
-If the applicant is applying more than three years after residency
completion, the applicant must provide evidence of 150 approved CME
hours completed during the three years immediately preceding
application.
