Indiana Academy of Family Physicians

All Member Congress of Delegates Summary

The Congress of Delegates is the one time per year for Family Physicians to meet and direct IAFP policy. The IAFP Congress meets yearly during the IAFP Annual Convention on Friday evening and Saturday morning. All members are welcome and have a vote!

During the first session of the Congress officer reports are given and resolutions are are assigned to reference committees. The reference committees meet immediately after the first session to hear testimony from IAFP members on the resolutions. During the second session of Congress, the resolutions are voted on.

Resolutions
You can direct the IAFP and AAFP’s actions by writing a resolution. We’ve had resolutions on a range of topics including medical education, advocacy, Medicaid, public health, board structure, and more.

The deadline for resolutions is 30 days prior to the Annual Convention. At the Annual Convention all resolutions are debated at the Congress of Delegates, and those resolutions that pass become IAFP policy or are forwarded onto the AAFP Congress (federal issues only).

How do you write a resolution?
The IAFP utilizes a Whereas/Resolved format
1. Whereas is followed by the conditions of the problem
2. Resolved is followed by the actions to be taken

Example:
WHEREAS, new family physicians often find themselves challenged by the transition from residency to practice; and

WHEREAS, this transition could be assisted by the help of the IAFP, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the IAFP consider offering a reduced membership fee for physicians in their first 3 years of practice after residency.
